Sunhawk Academy

Clinical Services

SunHawk Academy utilizes a broad range of therapeutic services that are integrated into the recovery model, including:

  • Weekly individual, group, and family therapy led by licensed therapists
  • An integrated treatment plan
  • Parent development workshops
  • Complete aftercare support services through eGetGoing, a well-established online substance abuse treatment program staffed by certified addiction counselors

The Treatment Team Approach

Our clinical staff includes a clinical director, a psychiatrist, licensed substance abuse counselors, master's level therapists, a registered nurse, and certified nursing assistants. A psychiatrist and pediatrician, who are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, meet with students on campus once a week.

SunHawk Academy uses an integrated treatment team approach, with clinical staff and residential staff working closely together to assess each student's particular needs, create an individualized treatment plan, and make decisions regarding each student's progress and goals.

The Power of Group Therapy

Group therapy is a foundation of treatment at SunHawk. In addition to individual and family therapy, students at SunHawk receive 28 hours per week of substance abuse-focused group therapy sessions, addressing critical recovery topics such as character education, life skills, spirituality, relapse prevention, and the 12 Steps.

Because adolescents tend to be heavily influenced by the opinions and experiences of their peers, group therapy has proven particularly effective for teens in recovery. Students are responsive to receiving honest, constructive feedback from fellow students even more so than they are to receiving comments or advice from parents or therapists. The bonds created in group therapy contribute to the strong peer culture at SunHawk, which itself is deeply healing.

"Take it to Group"

Group therapy is one of the most effective ways to reach substance abusing teens. With more than 28 hours per week dedicated to group therapy, "take it to group" is a phrase commonly heard when issues arise at SunHawk. In "group," teens share in each other's frustrations and accomplishments, together finding ways to hold each other accountable and live a better life.
