At SunHawk Academy we offer two separate opportunities for parent education. We believe that parents have a critical role in the therapeutic process and we want to help you understand what treatment is about and how you are a part of it.
The "Treatment Workshop" is the first of the two workshops and focuses on the treatment process here at SunHawk Academy. We want you to understand what treatment and recovery are about and what your child will be experiencing while here. This workshop will address issues related to the change or therapeutic process and each person's part in that process. We want to help you understand and be prepared for the most common behaviors from students and how to respond in ways that will help your child through the stages of change. You will be taught why we emphasize the "12 step" model of recovery and how it can help your child and your family. There will be a great deal of information given to you over a period of two very full days. The workshop will utilize both experiential group learning as well as more "classroom" type instruction. You will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get answers. Our hope is that you will feel more comfortable in your understanding of the therapeutic process and what your student will be experiencing at SunHawk Academy.
The "Transition Workshop" is the second of the two Parent Education workshops offered. We anticipate that this workshop will coincide with planning for your child's next stage in recovery when they leave SunHawk Academy. The basic format will be quite similar to the Treatment Workshop but will focus on the process of transition to the next phases of recovery. We will address why finishing the program offered at SunHawk Academy is critical to continued recovery and success in life. You will understand why we refer to this as "transition" rather than "completion" or "graduation." We will also help you understand your role in this transition process and you will be educated about the many resources to assist you once your child leaves SunHawk Academy.
